‘Tis a Puzzlement May 29, 2008

This has been a very juicy newsy week and I have been all over the latest scandals in-between activities but have been in a  busy mode and have not had the time to write. Woe is me. The stories are too good not to take the time to share. Today I will focus solely on the Scott McClellan book and save the other stuff for the weekend.

Former press secretary and Bush puppy, Scott McClellan has made the gang on the thug team start to dance. His ‘tell all’ is more proof (do we really need any more proof?) about the thugs out of the White House who have lied, deceived, bullied and mislead this country to an unjustified war, 4,100 troop deaths, countless Iraqi deaths, International disgrace, a rape of the Constitution and an economy that is going down the cess pool. In a nutshell, McClellan’s book reveals what most of us knew and now the thugs are in lockstep once again, scratching their heads and lying in unison. They are using the terms puzzlement, puzzle, puzzling to describe McClellan’s book as if it should be categorized under fiction in your local bookstore.

For instance: The White House Wednesday said it was “puzzled” by a former spokesman’s memoir in which he accuses the Bush administration of being mired in propaganda and political spin and at times playing loose with the truth. Dana Perino, the latest deer in the headlight at the press secretary podium said “Scott, we now know, is disgruntled about his experience at the White House. For those of us who fully supported him, before, during and after he was press secretary, we are puzzled. It is sad. This is not the Scott we knew.”

And here is turd blossom himself on Fox

So why does all this truthiness still enrage me? Because no one ever gets punished in this thuggish administration and the Country continues to go down the tubes. Now THAT IS A PUZZLEMENT!

As we experience Memorial Day we ought to remember why we have this three day weekend. It is not just a time to ‘fire up the grill’ as Bush says or to go out and buy a mattress. This is the day to remember all those who have served this country to help to preserve the way of life most of us enjoy. Why then, does this poor excuse for an occupant of the White House continue to deny those troops in our armed services today by promising to veto the newest GI Bill. The man has no conscience and is a national disgrace.

- The trick of dumping all of the bad news a candidate, party or campaign has to proffer, right before a three day weekend is overused – but effective. McCain dumped a skillion pages of his medical records (that could not be photocopied) onto a deluged press. They also decided to throw out there the fact that Cindy McCain made $6 million in taxable income last year.  Of course the bad new that almost everyone on his campaign is a lobbyist is not drowned out to these perked up ears. And the fact that Hillary made that awful utterance about RFK’s assassination almost managed to ease the McCain dumping. It was a good day for McCain – bad day for Hillary. Stay tuned for worse days ahead.

-  No ifs ands or buts – I am against the horse drawn carriage industry that amazingly still exists in Manhattan. Check out this trailer for a movie about this abusive practice:

Hillary Clinton’s comment about things that can happen in June in past races for the nomination was awful. It is time to leave the race. Pack it up and get back to New York State and be the Senator that we were proud of having before your desperation to get this nomination turned sour.

-  I am angry with Chuck Schumer for getting Michael Mukasey the job of AG. He is not a moderate and is obstinately blocking Congress’ right to question the administration on many things. He is also now defending former government lawyers who drew up the legal basis of the Bush administration’s use of harsh interrogation methods against terror suspects. He told graduates from Boston College of Law graduates Friday that lawyers doing their part to protect the country in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks should not now be held liable or face criminal charges for doing so. Mukasey is in lockstep with the thugs in this administration.

Condileeza Rice also gets me nuts. She now is defending the illegal actions of this administration because it was a time for unusual actions to protect us from future attacks. But she acknowledged that those rules had since changed and that the United States was a “different place” then, adding that the administration’s top priority at the time had been preventing new attacks and not necessarily observing fine legal points. As this administration winds down we are getting even more bullshit thrown at us on a daily basis.

- I am angry at the Chinese Government for its lack of oversight in the building industry, lasck of oversight in product control, negligence, corruption and sheer incompetence. Yes they are big, yes they are powerful, yes they are a huge market for our goods (if we had any) but being a Communist country has lots of advantages. You can pretty much do whatever you want without questions from anyone. It wil be interesting to see if this latest nightmare that they are experiencing inches this giant power closer to a democracy. Stay tuned.

- What do I like? I like the animals at the Central Park Zoo. Check out this week’s photo montage for a smile or too

-  In the always leave’ em laughing mode, no matter how pissed I get:

Yes, people are getting fatter but NYC is getting thinner. It seems that after a more accurate measurement of the City it has been determined that we are 17 square miles smaller than we thought. We have shrunk from 322 square miles of land down to 304.8. And you thought it was hard finding an apartment before? Gasp! A team spent months analyzing, recalculating and came up with our new numbers.”17 square miles could accommodate 13 more Central Parks, nearly a third of Washington, D.C., about three dozen versions of Vatican City and nearly two dozen replicas of Monaco. If 17 square miles were populated at Manhattan’s density, New York might be home to as many as 1.1 million more people. At the price of an acre in Midtown, as recently computed by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, 17 square miles could be worth $1 trillion.”

- Have you been worrying (albeit with much guilt) more about the black and white pandas than the unfathomable nameless numbers of Chinese people that have been killed or hurt during last week’s earthquake? Watch this cell phone video taken on May 19th of the rescue of some of the pandas by their  handlers at the Wolong National Nature Reserve in the area.

- McCain needs to be shown for what he really thinks and does and not as the media portrays him as being:

- Rove gets a subpoena: After much legal wrangling with Rove’s attorney, the House Judiciary Committee finally said enough is enough and issued a subpoena to the turd blossom to appear on July 10th to answer questions about whether the White House improperly meddled with the Justice Department. Raise your hands if you think Rove will be forthcoming? Counting hands?

- Oh those wild and wacky Repugnant Senators. Some of them (75-22) have broken ranks and voted with the Democrats to add support for veterans and the unemployed on a bill paying for another year of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Guess what? Bush plans to veto the bill because he (and McCain) believe that there would be too many incentives in this bill for GI’s not to re-up. Stay tuned.

-  I don’t know about you but I have been following that wacky story out of Texas (where else?) about the 400 or so fundamentalist kids who were taken away from their parents and have been held in child services’ hands. Well, a Texas appeals court that the state had no right to take more than 400 children from a polygamist sect’s ranch. This could unravel one of the biggest child-custody cases in U.S. history. Stay tuned.

-  Brilliant bird finally gets rid of its nemesis.

Alternate Title: The Incredible Heaviness of Scandinavia

Story: Some foreign films translate to an American audience’s mind set better than others. This award winning Norwegian film directed and co-written by Joachim Trier expresses the traditional Scandinavian traits such as depression, ennui, suicide attempts, isolation, self-destruction and angst. These traits are not what you usually find in a Hollywood blockbuster, eh?

That said, there are some fine things to admire in this import that all lovers of film can enjoy. The first 10 minutes of the film are amazing. We meet our two protagonists at a mailbox as they are about to post their brilliant novels to publishers. We experience in a vignette what might have happened if all went well for the two of them. The remainder of the film explores what actually happened to the two young men after this meeting at the mailbox.

The film surveys the rocky road of celebrity as one of the young men hits it big and the other has to struggle the long road towards creating art. The film is about those youthful, sweet years when all things are possible and the gradual reality of life intruding on those dreams.

Check out the free-wheeling trailer. Keep in mind that the film is not as hip happy as it seems in the promo.

Acting: Espen Klouman-Høiner and Anders Danielsen Lie are superlative as the two young men. The rest of the cast is also fine including: Viktoria Winge, Henrik Elvestad, Christian Rubeck, Odd Magnus Williamson, Rebekka Karijord, Henrik Mestad, Pål Stokka, Sigmund Sæverud

Predilection: None

Critters: A dog with one of the cameos that made me laugh.

Food: With all of that angst there was not much time for slow dining.

Sex Spectrum: A sex scene with not much passion.

Soundtrack: Some loud tunes.

Visual Art: The film is stark and cold and my memory is in Black and White.

Theater Audience: About 10 other aficionados of foreign films at the Sunshine Theater.

Weather: It was fine in Oslo

Sappy Factor: 0

Quirky Meter: 0

Squirm Scale: The suicide attempt is squirmy.

Drift Factor: I did not drift at all.

Predictability Level: I had absolutely no idea where this film was headed.

Tissue Usage: 0

Oscar Worthy: No – although it won a bunch of awards in Norway.

Big Screen or Rental: If you want to see it on the big screen I have a feeling you need to hustle before it evolves into CD form.

Length: 110 minutes

The ‘F’ Word May 18, 2008

I like themes. The goofs and gaffs of the media have been widespread this week and they inspired me to research the ‘F’ word and other stupid utterances by people in the news. NY’s own Sue Simmons, who has been bringing us the Live at Five news on NBC since 1980,  said the ‘F’ word to co-anchor Chuck Scarborough, during an evening promo for the 11PM news. This is New York City. You can hardly leave your building without hearing foul words from people of all walks of life, ages and ethnicities. Cursing is a way of life in the big city and I am pretty sure these words are used everywhere else too. I am so used to hearing the ‘f’ word used as noun, transitive verb, adjective, intransitive verb, a part of a word and then some that most of the time I do not even hear the tirade. It is only a word. Get used to it. It is not going away anytime soon.

Watch a history of the ‘F’ word:

-  Watch as Sue both uses the ‘F’ word and then apologizes for it.

-  Do you think doing the news, weather, sports or some other in front of the camera activity seems stressful? Well apparently so. Here are ten more angry meltdowns for you to enjoy:

-  Sometimes you should just stick to the script. Impromptu remarks can be very dangerous. Mike Huckabee’s ‘dead on arrival’ joke while speaking in front of the always conservative and receptive NRA was shocking to hear. Watch yourself.

-  Remember back in 2004 when Dick ‘the dark force’ Cheney told Pat Leahy to go ‘f’ himself’ on the Senate floor? Charles Krauthammer, of the Washington Post wrote a very funny article addressing this particular incident. Enjoy.

-  If you have not seen the continued fallout from the Bill O’Reilly tape check out this video from the people at barelypolitical.com

-  Check out wikipedia’s history of the ‘F’ word.

-  Some funny political gaffs:

-  Since polar bears are all over the news this week too, check out my video of Ida, one of our two Central Park Zoo polar bears from last May.

Good news and bad news: The Interior Department declared the polar bear a threatened species Wednesday, saying it must be protected because of the decline in Arctic sea ice from global warming. Interior Secretary, Dirk Kempthorne said, that it would be ”inappropriate” to use the protection of the bear to reduce greenhouse gases, or to broadly address climate change. He said the Bush administration wouldn’t use the act to limit emissions from industrial sources or otherwise regulate greenhouse gases. Law and science “wouldn’t allow it” because direct connections couldn’t be made between specific sources of gas emissions and harm to polar bears, he said. In addition, he announced a special rule allowing petroleum exploration and extraction to continue, saying it didn’t harm polar bears. So just what does this mean? It is one of those Catch 22’s of Gov’t-speak. They will do nothing about the causes of the melting ice, which is causing the polar bear to be a threatened species. Aurgh!

-  My candidate for President, John Edwards, gave the speech of a lifetime last night when, in Grand Rapids, MI, he endorsed Barack Obama for President. I cried at the loss of such a fine man as a candidate, but then was happy with the thought that he would make a GREAT Attorney General in the Obama administration. It was also eye raising to hear that NARAL, an organization I also support, came out with an endorsement for Obama as well. That must have been some board room brawl. John Edwards’ endorsement speech made me realize how much we have lost since he dropped out of the race. Take the time today and listen to the entire powerful speech and endorsement.

Keith Olbermann’s special comment (in two video’s below) was a whopper last night. He was inspired to rant for 12 minutes because of Bush’ interview with politico.com where he talked about the  special sacrifice he made because of the war in Iraq. And yes, his special sacrifice was giving up golf. You will gasp, you will shout, you will cry. Aurgh!

-  Bad News: Just what does it take to get Karl Rove to testify under oath? A House Judiciary Committee deadline passed Monday with former White House adviser Karl Rove standing by his refusal to testify about allegations that he pushed the Justice Department to prosecute former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman. Rove offered to send a letter instead of testifying. Aurgh!

-  Good News: The Democrats hit one out of the park on Tuesday night. A Democrat, Travis Childers,  beat the Repugnant in a special election. This is the third special election now that a Dem has beaten a Repugnant in a very conservative district. Of course, the Democrat, is just as conservative as the Repugnant, but it is another one for our team. When Mr. Childers is sworn in, the House will have 236 Democrats to 199 Republicans. This does not bode well for the Repugnants in November.

-  Check out the video link to the fallout because the Repugnant’s latest defeat which includes a story about the new Repugnant brand. Republicans have come up with a new slogan to bring them into November. It’s called “the change you deserve.” And perhaps indicative of the way things are going for Republicans, it was discovered after they unveiled their slogan that is also the brand trademark for an antidepressant drug Effexor put out by Wyeth.

- In the leave ‘em laughing mode, no matter what:

Movie Review: The Fall

Alternate Title: Eye Candy

Story: I hope this visually stunning, exceptional film finds an audience. It is not to be missed. It was directed by Tarsem, who goes solely by his first name. For those that like to know this stuff, his last name is Singh. He self-financed this four year endeavor which was filmed in gorgeous locations around the world. It was written by Dan Gilroy, Tarsem and Nico Soultanakis and based on the 1981 film Yo Ho Ho by Zaco Heskija.

The two main characters find themselves recovering from separate falls in an LA hospital in 1915. Roy, a stuntman lays paralyzed and depressed from a stunt gone wrong. Alexandria, a five year old girl, suffered a fall while picking oranges in the local groves. He wiles away their confined time together by telling her a fabulous story, an epic tale, which she re-imagines with characters that surround her in the hospital. Therefore, like the Wizard of Oz, most of the people in the film have dual roles.

The story is certainly secondary to the cinematic entertainment and beauty of the film. If you want to see something original, with images that will stay with you, then try to find this film in your neighborhood. Get there as quickly as you can. It needs to be seen on a BIG screen. By the way – this is not a film for kids. The epic tale gets very dark at the end and the violence is graphic.

The trailer will give you a hint of what you can expect:

Acting: Lee Pace is perfect as the aching, depressed movie stuntman. His chemistry with the amazing little girl, Catinca Untaru is exceptional. She is adorable, honest and totally believable. The supporting cast are all terrific and include: Justine Waddell, Julian Bleach, Leo Bill , Robin Smith , Marcus Wesley and Jeetu Verma.

Predilection: I liked the preview when I saw it a few months ago.

Critters: Oh my – what epic tale does not have critters? The monkey (I think it was a rhesus monkey) was amazing and has a big part. Also seen was an elephant, flamingos, cows, horses and oxen.

Food: Oranges play a big role.

Sex Spectrum: I cannot remember any sex or nudity at all. Just some loin cloths.

Soundtrack: Wonderful mix of music by Krishna Levy including Beethoven.

Opening Titles: An inviting slow motion, black and white sequence.

Visual Art: Bravo to director of photography Colin Watkinson. I looked up the locations and the list is impressive: Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India, Andaman Islands, Argentina, Bali, Indonesia, Brazil, Cambodia, Cape Town, South Africa, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India, Chile, China, Egypt, Fiji, Himalayas, Nepal, Hollywood, Italy, Jodhpur, Rajasthan, India, Ladakh, Jammu & Kashmir, India, Maldives, Namibia, Prague, Czech Republic, Romania, South Africa and Turkey.

Theater Audience: Just us and two other people.

Weather: Perfect weather for an epic tale.

Squirm Scale: The finale is a bit violent.

Drift Factor: I was riveted throughout.

Predictability Level: I was not sure what was going to happen at all.

Tissue Usage: 0

Oscar Worthy: Yes

Big Screen or Rental: BIGGEST screen you can see it on would be perfect.

Length: Under two hours.

Movie Review: Surfwise

Alternate Title: Chairman of the Board

Story: I don’t know what your childhood was like, but mine, other than being Jewish, bore no resemblance to anything that the Paskowitz clan experienced. Over the past few decades you might have seen a feature on a news program about this singular family. This is an intriguing documentary directed and written by Doug Pray. As the film opens we meet 84 year old Dorian Paskowitz. With his piercing blue eyes he regales us with stories about his philosophy of life, health, sex and child rearing.

Paskowitz went to Stanford Medical School and began his life as would be expected for an accomplished doctor. But after two failed marriages he threw in the towel, toured the world and decided to live life on his own terms. He married an extraordinary woman and raised nine children while living in a 24 foot trailer at the beach or anywhere else they felt like exploring. His kids did not go to school as Dorian felt that life was enough of an education. His kids majored in surfing and stayed together until they reached their 20’s.

The adult children are the talking heads and it is fascinating to hear them speak about their lives in retrospect. I do not want to spoil any of the stories but I found the whole concept deliciously appealing. Dorian claims to have introduced surfing to Israel. The surf camp they founded still exists but it now holds sessions in Cabo San Lucas, Montauk and San Diego. For some of Dorian’s philosophy go to his web site and check out his book.

Watch the trailer here but keep in mind that the trailer does not show any of the underbelly of the life on the road that the movie portrays:

Acting: The Paskowitz Clan, including: Dorian “Doc Paskowitz,” Juliette, David, Jonathan, Abraham, Israel, Moses, Adam, Salvador, Navah and Joshua.

Predilection: I like documentaries.

Food: Health was the foremost thing in the 24 foot trailer. That included only healthy food, no sugar, etc. etc. etc.

Sex Spectrum: Lots and lots of talk about sex, sexual freedom, etc. Some of it very humorous.

Soundtrack: Lively and appropriate.

Visual Art: What’s not to like about the beach, the waves and blue sky. The camper part was a bit claustrophobic for my taste.

Theater Audience: A theater full of aging Gidgets and Moon Doggies seen at the IFC.

Weather: It is always good weather for surfing in this film.

Sappy Factor: 0

Quirky Meter: As far as lifestyles are concerned, I think this would qualify for a 1 on the quirky scale.

Squirm Scale: 0

Drift Factor: I did not want to miss a wave.

Predictability Level: It was interesting to see what happened to all nine Paskowitz kids now that they are all adults.

Tissue Usage: 0

Oscar Worthy: No

Big Screen or Rental: Rental would probably be fine.

Length: 90 minutes

Movie Review: Before the Rains

Alternate Title: Fatal Attraction

Story: So what went wrong in the making of this lush, visually splendid film? The ingredients were all in order. There was a good cast, an interesting, albeit, not original story and beautiful scenery. Perhaps the blame is firmly at the hand of director, Santosh Sivan (The Terrorist) and the screenplay by Cathy Rabin. The story was based on Israeli film maker, Dany Verete’s film The Desert Trilogy: Yellow Asphalt. The passion between the characters was edited out or never existed. They all played their two dimensional roles well, but there was just no there, there.

The setting is 1937, Kerala, India. The Indian resistance to British Colonialism is rising but young Henry Moores wants to build a road up the mountain to get those much desired spices to market and prove his worth to his English father-in-law. He seems oblivious or indifferent to the consequences of engaging in an affair with a young married Indian woman who works on his plantation. As soon as he makes a gift of a handgun to his faithful Indian side kick you know things are going to go terribly wrong. And they do. Enter the English wife and son, the angry Indian husband, tribal tradition and the film quickly becomes a film about moral dilemmas, decency and honor – but you have seen it all before.

It had lots of promise. But the essential spice was missing. The trailer is all you need to see:

Acting: Linus Roache, who now plays Michael Cutter on Law & Order – who knew he was English? as Moores was just fine. Rahul Bose, Nandita Das, Jennifer Ehle and John Standing were all fine in their roles – they just had no zip.

Predilection: I like ‘all things Indian.’

Critters: It is India so there are lots of critters. A frog, bees, an elephant, dragon flies, a dog, birds and of course, cows.

Sex Spectrum: The one sex scene was filmed sensitively and looked more like a commercial for shampoo or perfume.

Opening Titles: Type superimposed over the lush landscape of Kerala, India.

Visual Art: You can have no qualms about the stunning landscape and the attention to detail of India in the ’30’s.

Theater Audience: We were in the balcony of the Paris Theater with a few other people. I do not know how many were downstairs but the ladies room was of course crowded as we exited the theater.

Weather: Lovely before the rains.

Sappy Factor: 0

Quirky Meter: 0

Squirm Scale: Watching a woman being beat up is always squirmy.

Drift Factor: I started to look at my watch after only 30 minutes.

Predictability Level: Over the top.

Tissue Usage: 0

Oscar Worthy: No

Big Screen or Rental: Rental would be fine. Try any of the other wonderful films that were also produced by the team of Merchant Ivory or any film by Mira Nair and you would have a better show.

Length: Long at 100 minutes.

I wanted to use ‘mothers’ as my theme today but I got very side-tracked. So there will be some negatives along with the positives of motherhood. This just in -Republicans Vote Against Moms – no, really! In the ass backwards world of politics, this one takes the cake (or apple pie).

-  How can I not discuss New York’s latest scandal, the Vito Fossella mess. What a Mother’s Day Fossella and his two families are having today, eh? Fossella is NYC’s only Republican Congressman. While researching this latest disgraced idiot, I found a website called VetoFossella. Who knew?  This guy apparently was in bed with lots of stuff other than his two wives. Fossella is history. His very conservative district will not tolerate two families. Tsk, Tsk. His other shenanigans apparently did not keep him from being re-elected over and over again. But this one – well – he should start packing his bags. he is being kicked off the Island.

-  There is another mother in the news that is driving me nuts. Did you hear about that 41 year old woman who is about to have her 18th child? Michelle Dugger has been pregnant for 135 months out of her life. They do 200 loads of laundry a month. They have a website and are going to have another TV show. Okay – listen up: your carbon footprint is HUGE. Having that number of children is insane. I do not care that you are debt-free and you home school them all (although that frightens me too) this is unconscionable. Plain and simple. The fact that this is lauded and promoted on mainstream TV is obscene.

It is the 100th anniversary of the celebration of Mother’s Day. The history of Ann Jarvis, who started it all is very interesting. Poor Ann, she got pissed that the day got so out of control that she was arrested for disturbing the peace at a Mother’s Day gathering.

-  Happy Mother’s Day out there to all of those who encourage, nurture, inspire, support, praise, strengthen, promote and generally give lots and lots of hugs. This week’s photo montage is for you:

-  An oldie but a funny for Mother’s Day:

Blackwater has once again gotten away with murder. The State Department has just renewed its contract to provide security for American diplomats in Iraq for at least another year. This is a table pounder and an eye popper.

John McCain hits the ball out of the park with a McBush beginning. The guy chosen to run the 2008 Republican National Convention resigned Saturday after a report that his lobbying firm used to represent the military regime in Myanmar. Good grief!

-  Update on the Tatiana the Tiger story and the two idiot brothers. San Francisco officials say an investigation has found the city not liable for injuries suffered by two brothers attacked by Tatiana. What does this mean? I think it means the boys have to go after the Zoo and its insurance company alone to collect a bajillion dollars. Good luck, kids.

-  Still a favorite and always gets a laugh:
