Thursday – back to hot and steamy July 26, 2007

flo.jpgWant of breath of fresh air and color? Check out my photos from the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx. Okay, enough with the pretty photos – back to the political mess we call Washington.

Alberto Gonzales could be the most annoying man on the planet. His smirk is the most irritating part of his being. He has that untouchable look of a man who knows where the bodies are buried (he buried most of them) and knows he cannot be touched. Read this article from the New Republic.

Bummer! The WEEKLY WORLD NEWS is folding its tent. After 28 years of amazing headlines and stories that have kept us chuckling at supermarket checkout lines this tabloid filled with fun and novel ideas will publish no more. No more photos of Bat Boy, hybrid beings, Roswell stories or Sasquatch with Elvis sightings. The only upside to this story is that they will still be on the web.
– What’s another petition between friends? Ask PetSmart to stop selling rabbits at its stores.

Liar liar pants on fire! Gonzales is going to have a chance for a do over. His testimony this week to the Judiciary Committee is apparently filled with lies. The Gang of Eight, prominent congressional leaders of both parties, were briefed about the President’s terrorist surveillance program immediately before it’s intended expiration date, documents just exposed reveal. Protocol warrants an opportunity for Pinocchio to review his testimony and change any misstatements. Stay tuned.

– Beware of Oscar the cat. He might be the grim kitty reaper.

None of the Above. Yesterday, over lunch, two of my long time political friends and I were discussing who the candidates are going to be in 2008. Here’s an interesting read about Why the Republicans don’t like their candidates

Gonzo on the Hill: a Comedic Tragedy – Forget about the politicization of the Justice Department. Forget about the falling morale there. Forget about the rise in violent crime in some of our biggest cities. Forget about the events leading up to the U.S. Attorney scandal and the way he has handled the prosecutor purge since. Forget about the Department’s role in allowing warrantless domestic surveillance. Forget about the contorted and contradictory accounts he’s offered before in his own defense. Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales deserves to be fired for his testimony Tuesday alone; for morphing into Jon Lovitz’s famous “pathological liar” character (or maybe just one of the Marx Brothers) as he tried to dodge and duck responsibility before the Senate Judiciary Committee not just for his shameful leadership at Justice but also his shameless role in visiting an ailing John Ashcroft in the hospital to try to strong-arm him into renewing the warrantless surviellance program. Can anyone out there remember a worse, less-inspiring, less confidence-inducing performance on Capitol Hill? I cannot.
