rabbit.jpgThe headline grabber ’53 Million-Year-Old Rabbit’s Foot Found, Oldest Known Record’ caught my eye and started me thinking about rabbits. And why not think about rabbits? This is the day of the Easter Bunny. So – for the first time on this blog I devote some time to rabbits. Why is a rabbit’s foot lucky? It certainly cannot be lucky for the rabbit since it no longer has it’s foot? There are a number of theories as to the origins of the lucky rabbit’s foot. There are also some superstitions (my favorite is – wearing rabbit-skin socks protects against pleurisy). – For those of you who were thinking of going out to buy a cute live bunny for Easter – please don’t. Opt for the chocolate kind, okay?

For some Easter fun:

– Speaking of luck – how lucky is it that the thugs in the White House have convinced the courts that they destroyed the hard drives that contained all of the e-mails that were being sought for the years 2003 to 2005?

– Lucky for Idaho that Senator Larry ‘wide stance’ Craig has apparently kept his promise and is not running for re-election.

– We are also lucky that Frank Rich is back this week with a cautionary column about our two feuding Democratic nominees.

–  Rabbits are everywhere in literature and film. There’s Peter Rabbit, Peter Cottontail, Br’er Rabbit, Watership Down, Beatrix Potter’s rabbits, Alice in Wonderland (who went down the rabbit hole) and Rabbit, Run, Rabbit Redux, Rabbit Is Rich and Rabbit at Rest . In film there is Rabbit Proof Fence, Donnie Darko, Crusader Rabbit, (my favorite) Harvey, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, Lovable Thumper in Bambi, Wallace & Gromitt and the Curse of the Were Rabbit and of course, let us not forget Bugs Bunny.

–  There is even a book called The Relaxed Rabbit (Massage for your pet bunny). Claims to reduce tension and help with rabbit behavioral issues among other things.

–  There are some odd rabbit products including: Scissors for kids and for all of you bunny huggers out there there are a myriad of products for you too.

–  For those that want to see some of my photos from this week’s visit to the Bronx Zoo that do not include rabbits, go here.

–  Yes, I know it is blatant product placement – but I liked the commercial with all of the colored rabbits and I laughed.
