bennyhotelMovie Review: Hotel for Dogs

Alternate Title: Adogable

Story: If you have a dog, want a dog, like dogs or ever plan to adopt a dog, you will like this film. Everyone else should probably not go to see it. I have a dog and he would have liked this film too. It was directed by Thor Freudenthal and written by Jeff Lowell, Bob Schooley and Mark McCorkle, based on the popular children’s book by Lois Duncan.

16 year old Andi and her 11 year old brother Bruce have been bouncing around the foster care system for three years since their parents died. They have been hiding their dog, Friday, for three years from the string of non-loving adults who have been housing them. They find an abandoned hotel that already has two stray dogs living in it and decide to keep their dog their too. Before you know it they have rounded up all of the stray dogs in town and are caring for them all, in a loving family environment.

The younger brother is an inventor and creates all sorts of wonderful Rube Goldberg devices to maintain order and discipline among the pack. Those scenes are by far the most enjoyable of the movie. The inventive scenes are funny, clever and the dogs steal the whole show. This is a fine family film and has a strong message about pet adoption.

Acting: Emma Roberts as Andi seems to be a lovely young lady and definitely has the family genes. Jake T. Austin as 11 year old Bruce, is adorable.Kyla Pratt and Johnny Simmons as Dave are typical Nickelodeon teens. Lisa Kudrow and Kevin Dillon as the foster adults are cartoon like. Don Cheadle as Bernie, the social worker is, as always nice to see on the big screen.

Trivia: Emma Roberts is the daughter of Eric Roberts and niece of Julia Roberts.

Predilection: I like dogs.

Critters: Lots and lots of dogs and one cat in a cameo.

Food: Lots of Pedigree dog food and the kids are served some slop by their foster mom.

Sex Spectrum: It is a Nickelodeon project. There is no sex.

Blatant Product Placement: Pedigree dog food.

Soundtrack: sweet

Opening Titles: A funny, graphic.

Sappy Factor: 2

Predictability Level: High

Tissue Usage: 0

Oscar Worthy: No

Big Screen or Rental: Rental would be fine.
