afiphotoYes, the fly over NYC was incredibly stupid. I heard the airplane that day and cringed.  I then waited for the sounds of sirens.  Not as many sirens started so I figured that it was a big nothing.  It was only later in the day that I heard about the moronic decision to have a photo op and scare the heck out of thousands of NYC residents as these planes flew very low over the Big Apple. Louis Caldera (who previously served as President Bill Clinton’s Secretary of the Army), Director of the White House Military office, has stepped down from his job following outrage over the flyover of Ground Zero in late April. If this were the Bush years he would have probably gotten the Medal of Freedom.

–  If you want to see the speech President Obama gave last night at the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner check out his charm, wit and delivery here.  It is a full 17 minutes of good fun. “I believe my next hundred days will be so successful that I will be able to complete them in 72 days,” he said to a roar of laughter. “And on my 73rd day, I will rest.”

–  Here is a fun contrast. Yesterday marked RNC Chairman Michael Steele‘s 100th day in office. ThinkProgress’s Victor Zapanta has put together a video of the highlights at his first hundred days. Quite a contrast.

–  There have been some terrific columns in the New York Times lately.  Check out this one by Gail Collins on The Care and Feeding of Arlen. She addresses loyalty and self indulgence like no one else can.

–  The frightening idea of the death of newspapers is headline news, as it should be. Frank Rich writes about The American Press on Suicide Watch.  “IF you wanted to pick the moment when the American news business went on suicide watch, it was almost exactly three years ago. That’s when Stephen Colbert, appearing at the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, delivered a monologue accusing his hosts of being stenographers who had, in essence, let the Bush White House get away with murder (or at least the war in Iraq).”

–  Am I going to see Star Trek?  You bet I am.  My buddy who is also a huge fan and I will be going to another galaxy tomorrow to enjoy the fun. Maureen Dowd writes today about newspapers and Barack Spock Obama. “I know Barack Spock likes newspapers. An aide told me during the campaign that Mr. Obama would get cranky if he didn’t have some time set aside during the day to read The New York Times.”

–  The Sacramento Zoo was the second zoo we visited on our recent eight facility zoo/aquarium world wind California road trip. It turns out that one of our young female Snow Leopards, Molly, who will be introduced to New York on June 11th at the Central Park Zoo, was born at the Sacramento Zoo.  Her mother is featured in today’s montage.

–  A very Happy Mother’s Day to all of the mothers, caregivers, nurturers, pamperers, surrogates and generally loving coddlers out there.

–  The Sacramento Zoo’s senior female chimpanzee is not pleased with the newest member of the troop.  Check out her very vocal displeasure in this 30 second clip.
