Me? An Opinion? March 9, 2010

Today the first of Antony Gormleys 31 life-sized figures was installed on top of 204 Fifth Avenue, the home of Pentagram Design’s New York offices.  The art will surround Madison Square Park.

I took Benny, my dog, out to watch the installation with me.  He peed on a tree while I was being interviewed by someone from the press. She asked me if I had an opinion about the art.  I chuckled to myself, ‘Me? An opinion?’  I think she was sorry she asked as I rattled on and on about public art ( which I like) and art in general.  She asked if people walking by might be afraid of the art.  I said very articulately, ‘Huh?’  She said that maybe people would think they were jumpers.  I laughed heartily.

Anyhow – it is a very cool installation.  There will be a total of 31 sculptures overlooking Madison Square Park with four life sized sculptures at ground level.

As Benny and I turned to go I see Harold Ford. Jr coming my way (I was the only one to notice him and there were people from the press all around the area).  He was yakking away on his iPhone, dressed most handsomely in a dark suit.  I stopped him and said ‘You should have hung in there. You should not have let Kirsten Gillibrand off of the hook.’  He told the person on the other end of the phone to wait a minute.  He looked me in the eye and said ‘Thank you Ma’am – I appreciate that and I will be back.’ He took my hand and gave me a firm handshake. In all of the excitement I forgot to take his picture.

No, this is not a post about cars.  It is about another of my pet peeve issues – the upcoming race (or non-race) for the New York Senate  seat once occupied by Hillary Clinton. Harold Ford has decided NOT to challenge the hand picked Kirsten Gillibrand because as he says “while I am convinced I could prevail against Ms. Gillibrand, I feared the winner of the primary would have little money and remain highly vulnerable to a well-financed Republican challenger at a time when the Democratic party controls the Senate by a slim majority.”  Oh, puleeze.

I am suggesting as he did that he would have won a primary battle but it would have been nice if someone were able to challenge Ms Gillibrand.  It pisses me off that the powers that be and all of the muckety mucks have tapped Ms. GIllibrand and no one, and they mean no one is to mess with their selection.

Here is what Ford wrote in the New York Times’ Op/Ed page today.

My favorite New Yorker is Anthony Weiner, US Congressman.  I would vote for him for any office that he might want to hold.

It is a tossup between the massive snow storm (hey, it is WINTER) that fell on New York and the devastating earthquake in Chile (hey, Chile is located on a major Fault line) but I noticed that our coifed and silly local news stations did not get around to announcing that our two year Governor, David Paterson, has ended his campaign for another term.  In fact, it was 16 minutes after the hour that this big story was featured on the telly.  Is another snow storm in winter that BIG a deal that our Governor’s quitting the race was not first in the TV evening news line up?

–  The state of our State is in a shambles.  The impotent ass-wipes in Albany have until the end of March to come up with a budget. Raise your hand if you think that is going to go smoothly.  Our Lt. Governor, Richard Ravitch, who was appointed by Paterson, may just wind up in the Governor’s seat if Paterson’s incompetency goes any deeper and the investigation into his shenanigans with the State Police uncovers more corruption.

–  Our clever and coy Attorney General, Andrew Cuomo (I refer to him as the Guv in Waiting) is still stalling for that perfect moment when he decides to throw his hat in the ring.  Of course, he is now in charge of investigating Paterson and the State Police.

–  How many out there miss Eliot Spitzer? Sigh.

–  Of course, we also have Charlie Rangel who continues to wield his Chairman’s gavel in an unrepentant fashion.   Do not forget about Harold Ford, Jr, who is also dicking around with the idea of running for the uber-protected Kirsten Gillibrand‘s seat.  Oh Hillary, where hath you gone?

This is how I visualize the New York Gang in Albany – slowly screwing all of us:

For a sweet change, take a look at some fabulous faces from my recent visit to the Miami Metrozoo.

NYC is quiet early on the weekends.  Most everyone is sleeping in or out of town. So while walking my dog Benny to Petco around 9AM  Saturday morning I spot a very handsome man exiting Zaro’s bakery. Is it Derek Jeter?  Does he, like David Wright, the Mets ball player and all around cute one, live around the corner from me?
The I realized – it was Harold Ford, Jr. He’s the man that moved from Tennessee three years ago after losing his Senate race and has quietly begun to stir the pot here in the Big Apple. He appears regularly on MSNBC as a talking head. I mentioned him awhile back as the guy who has the chutzpah to challenge Kirsten Gillibrand in the upcoming Democratic primary.  He was on his cellphone speaking to someone about an upcoming interview,  I was going to interrupt him and tell him to ‘go for it’ but Benny had to sniff a very pungent fire hydrant and I missed my chance.  Ford wrote an op/ed piece in the NY Times today. I am not sure what his real agenda is – but stay tuned – the NYC Primary is going to be very interesting.  Andrew Cuomo is going to throw his big hat into the Democratic Primary for Governor this week too.

–  The PS on my jury duty experience last week.  I was disqualified from one jury for being too opinionated. Moi?  We were all excused mid-day on the second day and thanked for our service.  We were told that we would not be called for any State jury duty for the next six years. However- if the Feds call us for jury duty – well, good luck.  So, it is anyone’s guess who will be called for the upcoming terrorist trials (if they ever happen).  Can you imagine that jury pool?
